The first game sampled when we powered up our GameCube system for the first time was Wave Race: Blue Storm. Sure, the fact that we didn't have Luigi's Mansion right off the bat had something to do with it, but we were also simply excited to revisit one of the N64`s classic titles in new GameCube-enhanced form.
You'll notice the wonderful look of the game first. Forget all those little video camera grabbed videos you've seen of the game, you need to see this running off a clear television for yourself. The game demonstrates the GameCube's flawless image quality (software has a Dreamcast look to it, which is good, since the DC is known for its astounding video quality). On top of the clean look are the best water effects ever seen in a game, giant raceways that draw off into the distance and all-around smooth movement even with a full set of opponent racers.
Beyond just the looks, Wave Race seems to bring back the great feel of the original. Nintendo knows water sports well. Moving your racer around the track is second nature, and performing tricks is easy to get used to after just a few tries.
Worried about load times getting in the way of your racing? Don't be. Nintendo seems to have already mastered the art of quick loading with this game. There's zero load up when you first start the game off, zero load time between menu screens, and when you actually start up a race, only a couple of seconds waiting. Even this last period of waiting is masked by a very attractive water-filled title screen for the level. Overall, one gets the feeling of playing a cartridge game rather than a optical disc based title, something that fans of Nintendo's previous systems will love to hear.
Of course, we've only been able to sample just a bit of the game at this point, and all of this was through single player (we only have one controller!). On top of that, many features such as new tracks and, we presume, the changing weather for the tracks (tsunami mode anyone?), are locked up just waiting for us to perform some special gaming feat in order to unlock. Considering how much fun we've already had with the game thus far, we'll be playing this non stop until we've opened up everything.
Because this is one of three announced games to be released for GameCube over the next month expect a lot more in-depth coverage. Check our preview for all the latest movies.
